Have you recently gotten your dentures? Now that you have them, you can be sure to enjoy a fully restored smile again. However, many patients sometimes find it challenging to speak with them on. Fortunately, this doesn’t have to be the case for long. Keep reading to learn three steps to follow when talking with dentures to make the process easier!
Step #1: Repeat Pronunciations & Elongations
Once you’re wearing your new dentures, you’ll want to get familiar with how they work and feel in your mouth. One of the first things you should do is to practice pronouncing various words, especially those you find difficult. Repeat their sounds and elongate commonly used words or phrases to grow more accustomed to your restorations. You should also try enunciating more troublesome noises, such as the ‘S’ and ‘F’ letters, so you can avoid issues with them later on.
Step #2: Read Aloud in Private
After you get familiar with making sounds with your dentures, try speaking to yourself out loud. This can help you regain your confidence while talking with your dentures in, especially since it’ll be done in private. Read a book or the newspaper so you can get used to the sound of your voice. You can also try singing in the shower to make things fun!
Step #3: Talk With Family & Friends
Now that you feel more comfortable speaking and pronouncing words in the comfort of your home, it’s time to converse with others. Spend some time talking with your friends and family. This can help you build your self-esteem as well as improve your speech with your dentures on. Speaking with someone close to you can be a major help, especially if they can identify words that you’re struggling with. They’ll be able to help you practice these, making you all the better with talking normally with dentures.
Over time, with lots of practice, you should be able to speak clearly like you did before! But if you’re still having difficulty talking with your dentures, you can always consult your dentist, and they’ll be more than happy to help.
