These dairy products are all rich in calcium, a mineral that can fortify your teeth and help to prevent decay. But what if you’re allergic to dairy or just don’t have a taste for it? The Benefits of Dairy: More than Just Calcium

Experts recommend that adults consume two to three servings of dairy each day in order to get the calcium they need. However, the benefits of dairy products go further than simply providing everyone’s favorite bone-building mineral. In addition to being rich in calcium, diary products also contain magnesium and vitamin D, both of which help your body to make the best use of the calcium you ingest.

  • Vitamin D signals your intestines to process calcium and absorb it into the bloodstream.
  • Magnesium converts vitamin D into its active form.

While not all dairy products naturally contain magnesium and vitamin D (for example, skim milk has no vitamin D, but whole milk does), some food sellers enrich their products with these extra minerals so you can get the full benefit of the calcium you take in.

Don’t Like Dairy? Don’t Worry

Milk is great for your teeth, but you don’t have to drink it if you don’t want to or if you are lactose intolerant. In fact, there are lots of nondairy foods that offer calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D. Here are some examples:

  • To boost your calcium intake, eat sardines, bok choy, kale, almonds, and seaweed. Many types of nondairy milks, like soy milk, are also rich in this essential mineral.
  • For more magnesium, snack on almonds, bananas, cashews, sunflower seeds, oatmeal, and broccoli.
  • To get more vitamin D, add some fatty fish (like salmon), whole eggs, and beef liver into your diet. Your body can also produce its own vitamin D; all you have to do is expose your bare skin to sunlight for a few minutes. In about half the time it would take you to start burning, you can get your body to create enough vitamin D for the day.

If you’re ever afraid that you aren’t getting the vitamins and minerals that your teeth and bones need to stay strong, don’t hesitate to talk to your doctor or dentist about your concerns. They may suggest that you make specific dietary changes or start taking supplements.

Dairy is great for your teeth, but it isn’t essential. If you eat a balanced diet, you can reap all of the benefits of dairy without ingesting so much as a drop of milk.
