Dentures are one of the most effective ways to replace missing teeth. Whether you need a few or an entire row of pearly whites, you can be sure to enjoy the benefits of a full smile again. Although your restorations will be durable and reliable, their longevity will depend on how well you treat them. Read on to learn eight crucial tips on caring for dentures so you can make the most of them for years to come!
Tip #1: Handle Your Dentures with Care
While your restorations will be constructed out of strong materials, they can still be susceptible to damage. Be sure to handle them gently and carefully when either putting them in, taking out, or cleaning them. Try having a towel or something soft beneath you as you hold them to avoid breakage in case you drop them.
Tip #2: Brush Your Dentures Daily
Your dentures won’t be able to get cavities, but you’ll want to keep them clear of bacteria and plaque. Leaving these untreated can risk them spreading to other areas of your mouth, causing issues like oral infection or gum disease.
Tip #3: Remember to Clean the Rest of Your Mouth
Bacteria and plaque can gradually accumulate in your mouth. For this reason, you should make sure to brush your other teeth, gums, tongue, and cheeks at least twice a day to maintain good oral health.
Tip #4: Rinse Your Dentures After Every Meal
Food particles can collect and remain on your dentures for extended periods after eating. Instead of letting them sit on your restorations, it’s best to rinse them off once you’ve finished your meal.
Tip #5: Clear Off Leftover Denture Adhesive & Cleaning Solution
Although cleaning solutions and denture adhesive can be useful, they aren’t safe for you to swallow. Make sure to clean off any used agents from your dentures before putting them in your mouth.
Tip #6: Soak Them Overnight
To keep your gums healthy, you’ll need to remove your dentures before sleeping. You’ll also want to prevent warping your restorations if they dry, which can also allow bacteria to grow. Try soaking them in a cleaning solution or a glass of water to maintain them.
Tip #7: Visit Your Dentist Every Six Months
By seeing your dentist at least twice a year for checkups and cleanings, they can help monitor your oral health and detect early indications of developing problems. This can help you preserve your dentures as well as avoid more serious complications from starting.
Tip #8: Inform Your Dentist If They Feel Loose
Your mouth can typically change shape over time, especially if you’re missing teeth. If your dentures begin to feel off or lose their fit, be sure to contact your dentist for help. They can adjust or replace your restorations to help you avoid discomfort, gum irritation, and oral infections.
While your dentures will need to be replaced eventually, you can make them last longer with these few tips. Speak with your dentist if you have any further questions, and they’ll be happy to help!
